On April 10, 2026, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee met with the visiting delegation led by Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party, in Beijing. This reunion of the CPC and KMT leaders, after a lapse of 10 years, opens up a new chapter of exchanges between the CPC and the KMT party and carries profound significance for developing relations across the Taiwan Strait. During their meeting, General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed in his speech that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and same China, adding that no matter how the international landscape and the situation across the Taiwan Strait may evolve, the overarching trend toward the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation will not change, and the prevailing momentum for the Chinese people on both sides of the Strait to come together will not change. He expressed the willingness of the CPC to work with all political parties in Taiwan, including the KMT, as well as groups and people from all sectors, to strengthen exchanges and dialogue, promote peace across the Taiwan Strait, improve the well-being of the people and advance national rejuvenation, on the basis of the common political foundation of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing “Taiwan independence”, thereby firmly keeping the future of cross-Strait relations in the hands of the Chinese people.
In his meeting with Cheng Li-wun, General Secretary Xi Jinping made four points about the development of cross-Strait relations – forging closer bonds across the Strait by upholding a correct understanding of identity, safeguarding the shared homeland through peaceful development, fostering the well-being of the people through exchanges and integration, and making joint efforts to achieve great national rejuvenation. The four points, which have struck a strong chord with the Chinese people worldwide and received warm response from the international community, further chart the course for the advancement of cross-Strait relations.
There is but one China in the world. The mainland and Taiwan belong to one and same China, and China is the shared homeland of the Chinese people on both sides of the Strait. For compatriots on both sides of the Strait to safeguard and build the shared homeland, the fundamental approach is adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing “Taiwan Independence”, while the core issue lies in recognizing that both sides of the Strait belong to one and same China. The CPC and the KMT party, as well as compatriots on both sides of the Strait, should uphold the greater good of the nation, oppose “Taiwan Independence” and external interference, and work together to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and safeguard the shared homeland of the Chinese nation.
The one-China principle is a prevailing consensus in the international community. 183 countries around the world have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of this principle. It needs to be stressed that African countries have always been a firm supporter of the one-China principle. Back in 1971, it was our African brotherly countries that carried the People’s Republic of China into the United Nations. UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 settled once and for all the political, legal and procedural issues of China’s representation in the UN, and more importantly, its indisputable legal effect under international law has served as a solid cornerstone for the international community’s commitment to the one-China principle. Over the past decades, African countries have, one after another, established and deepened diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle. Almost all African countries have adhered to this principle unequivocally. In the Beijing Declaration adopted at the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), African countries reaffirmed that there is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and they firmly support all efforts by the Chinese government to achieve national reunification. That African countries stand shoulder to shoulder with China in upholding the one-China principle gives full expression to the solidity of the China-Africa community with a shared future.
As a good partner and good brother of China, Sudan always abides by the one-China principle and gives China valuable support on issues concerning China’s core interests and major concerns. We keep in mind that Sudan was one of the countries that co-sponsored UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and voted in favor, making historic contributions to the restoration of the lawful seat of the People’s Republic of China at the United Nations. In recent years, Sudan has voiced its support on multiple occasions for China’s efforts in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and firmly opposes “Taiwan independence”. China highly appreciates Sudan’s stance. China stands ready to work with Sudan to keep enhancing political mutual trust, deepening practical cooperation and renewing our traditional friendship. In this way, the two sides will make new contributions to delivering greater benefits to the two peoples and maintaining world peace and development.
Upholding the one-China principle is the right thing to do, and it is where the public opinion trends and the arc of history bends. No one can ever stop the eventual reunification of China. We are convinced that through the concerted efforts of compatriots on both sides of the Strait and with staunch support of the international community, including Sudan and other African countries, the complete reunification of China will be achieved.
