On May 4, 2026, the League of Peoples Organization in Sudan successfully held a “Thank You, China” event, which was attended by His Excellency Abdullah Yahya, Member of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, Ambassador Onour, Director of the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan in Port Sudan, Mr. Nimr, President of the League of Peoples Organization in Sudan, and other guests from various sectors of Sudanese society. As Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Sudan, I had the honor to attend and address the event, where the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries also sent a special congratulatory letter. During the Event, our Sudanese friends spoke highly of friendship and cooperation between China and Sudan, conveying the sincere bond that the Sudanese people have for the Chinese people. Inspired and deeply moved by what I witnessed, I believe the event fully demonstrated the profound connection between our two countries and will be remembered as a splendid gathering of people-to-people exchanges that showcases our solidarity and shared progress. As such, it holds great significance for bilateral relations, particularly for people-to-people exchanges.
China and Sudan enjoy a time-honored friendship that has grown strong like a luxuriant tree. In ancient times, the ancestors of our two nations came to know and befriend each other through the ancient Silk Road, creating many touching stories of mutual learning between our civilizations. In modern times, the people of our two nations stood shoulder to shoulder and supported each other in our respective struggles for national independence and liberation, demonstrating the deep roots of China-Sudan friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Sudan in 1959, the two peoples have intensified exchanges, promoting the sound and steady growth of bilateral friendship. In this new era, especially since the establishment of strategic partnership, China and Sudan have worked together to implement the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) and leverage Belt and Road cooperation as an opportunity to enrich our traditional friendship, making it a fine example of South-South cooperation and China-Africa friendship.
It is this millennium-old and increasingly strong friendship that lays a solid foundation for bilateral relations. China and Sudan have given each other mutual understanding and support on issues concerning our respective core interests and major concerns. Sudan always adheres to the one-China principle, firmly opposes “Taiwan independence” and supports China’s cause of reunification. China highly appreciates Sudan’s stance. The Chinese people firmly support the people of Sudan in independently choosing a development path that suits its own conditions, firmly support Sudan in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and resolutely oppose external interference in Sudan’s internal affairs. Under the guidance of President Xi Jinping and Chairman Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, China-Sudan strategic partnership is making great strides on its journey into the second decade. Looking back at history, we can conclude that the deep political mutual trust between China and Sudan is rooted in the profound friendship that the two peoples have developed over the years.
China-Sudan friendship is a valuable shared asset that we should cherish and carefully preserve. Standing at a new historic starting point, the peoples of China and Sudan should join hands to renew our traditional friendship and keep bringing new vitality into it in the new era. It is important for our two countries to substantiate and deepen exchanges in the areas of culture, education, art, sports, journalism, youth and women, and to encourage more non-governmental organizations engage in friendly interactions, so as to cement the bonds of friendship between our peoples and make the vision of a China-Sudan community with a shared future take deeper root in people’s hearts.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the beginning of diplomatic relations between China and Arab states, and between China and African countries. This year is also designated as the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. As a major African country, Sudan has witnessed this historic process and, more importantly, participated in and contributed to it every step on the way. We are pleased to see that the “Thank You, China” event becomes a key highlight of the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges in Sudan, building a new bridge connecting the hearts of our two peoples. We are deeply grateful to all friends from different social sectors who have warmly supported and participated in the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. Let us work together to forge closer bonds of friendship through people-to-people exchanges, inject sustained dynamism into the China-Sudan strategic partnership, and bring the vision of a China-Sudan community with a shared future to every household.
